The Rule

  • A pronoun must agree with its antecedent in number and gender
  • 'Each nurse brought his or her badge' — each is singular

Indefinite

  • Always singular: each, either, neither, everyone, somebody, anyone
  • Always plural: both, few, many, several

Clarity

  • Avoid a vague antecedent — if two nouns precede it, rename the noun
  • 'They' with no clear referent is a common test error

Types

  • Personal, possessive, reflexive (-self), relative (who, which, that), demonstrative (this, those)
