TEAS 7 Science Flashcards

Question 1

Nephron

Accepted Answer

The kidney's functional unit — filters blood and forms urine.

Question 2

Platelets

Accepted Answer

Cell fragments that begin blood clotting.

Question 3

Mitosis

Accepted Answer

One cell → two genetically identical cells. Growth and repair.

Question 4

Chemical vs physical change

Accepted Answer

Chemical produces a NEW substance (rusting). Physical does not (melting).

Question 5

Gene

Accepted Answer

A segment of DNA coding for a particular protein or trait.

Question 6

DNA base pairing

Accepted Answer

A pairs with T, C pairs with G. In RNA, uracil replaces thymine.

Question 7

Osmosis

Accepted Answer

Passive movement of WATER across a semipermeable membrane.

Question 8

Pituitary gland

Accepted Answer

The 'master gland' — directs other endocrine glands.

Question 9

Independent vs dependent variable

Accepted Answer

Independent is what you change; dependent is what you measure.

Question 10

Diaphragm

Accepted Answer

Contracts and moves DOWN to inhale; relaxes to exhale.

Question 11

Liver

Accepted Answer

Produces bile, detoxifies, stores glycogen.

Question 12

Nucleus

Accepted Answer

Stores DNA and directs the cell's activities.

Question 13

Catalyst

Accepted Answer

Speeds a reaction without being consumed. Enzymes are biological catalysts.

Question 14

Blood flow

Accepted Answer

Body → RA → RV → lungs → LA → LV → body.

Question 15

Bile

Accepted Answer

Emulsifies fats. Made by the liver, stored in the gallbladder.

Question 16

Air pathway

Accepted Answer

Nose/mouth → pharynx → larynx → trachea → bronchi → bronchioles → alveoli.

Question 17

Heart chambers

Accepted Answer

Right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, left ventricle.

Question 18

Mitochondrion

Accepted Answer

Produces ATP through cellular respiration — the cell's powerhouse.

Question 19

Active transport

Accepted Answer

Moves substances AGAINST the gradient; requires ATP.

Question 20

Diffusion

Accepted Answer

Movement of particles from HIGH to LOW concentration. Passive.

Question 21

Charges

Accepted Answer

Proton positive, electron negative, neutron neutral.

Question 22

Levels of organization

Accepted Answer

Cell → tissue → organ → organ system → organism.

Question 23

Ribosome

Accepted Answer

Builds proteins.

Question 24

Control group

Accepted Answer

The group that does NOT receive the treatment — the comparison baseline.

Question 25

Scientific method

Accepted Answer

Question → hypothesis → experiment → collect data → conclusion.

Question 26

Capillaries

Accepted Answer

One cell thick — the site of gas and nutrient exchange.

Question 27

Ligament vs tendon

Accepted Answer

Ligament joins bone to bone; tendon joins muscle to bone.

Question 28

Homeostasis

Accepted Answer

Maintaining a stable internal environment, usually by negative feedback.

Question 29

Chloroplast

Accepted Answer

Site of photosynthesis — plant cells only.

Question 30

Thyroid gland

Accepted Answer

Secretes T3/T4, which set the body's metabolic rate.

Question 31

Golgi apparatus

Accepted Answer

Modifies, packages and ships proteins.

Question 32

Pancreas

Accepted Answer

Releases insulin (lowers glucose) and glucagon (raises it), plus digestive enzymes.

Question 33

Skin layers

Accepted Answer

Epidermis (outer), dermis (vessels and nerves), hypodermis (fat).

Question 34

Atomic number

Accepted Answer

The number of PROTONS — it defines the element.

Question 35

Neuron parts

Accepted Answer

Dendrites receive, the cell body processes, the axon transmits.

Question 36

Red vs white blood cells

Accepted Answer

Red cells carry oxygen; white cells fight infection.

Question 37

Alveoli

Accepted Answer

Tiny air sacs in the lungs where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged.

Question 38

pH scale

Accepted Answer

0–14. Below 7 acidic, 7 neutral, above 7 basic. Each unit is a 10× change.

Question 39

Largest organ

Accepted Answer

The skin.

Question 40

Dominant vs recessive

Accepted Answer

A dominant allele shows with one copy; a recessive needs two.

Question 41

Mass number

Accepted Answer

Protons + neutrons.

Question 42

Skeletal system functions

Accepted Answer

Support, protection, movement, mineral storage, blood cell production.

Question 43

Three muscle types

Accepted Answer

Skeletal (voluntary), cardiac (involuntary, striated), smooth (involuntary).

Question 44

Meiosis

Accepted Answer

One cell → four non-identical cells with HALF the chromosomes. Sex cells.

Question 45

Artery vs vein

Accepted Answer

Arteries carry blood AWAY from the heart; veins carry it back.

Question 46

Urine pathway

Accepted Answer

Kidney → ureter → bladder → urethra → out.

Question 47

Small intestine

Accepted Answer

Where most nutrient absorption happens, via villi and microvilli.

Question 48

Large intestine

Accepted Answer

Reabsorbs water and forms stool.

Question 49

Cell membrane function

Accepted Answer

Selectively permeable — controls what enters and leaves the cell.

Question 50

Lysosome

Accepted Answer

Contains digestive enzymes; breaks down waste and worn-out parts.
