The Pump

  • Four chambers: right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, left ventricle
  • Atria receive; ventricles pump
  • The left ventricle is thickest — it pumps to the whole body
  • Valves stop backflow: tricuspid, pulmonary, mitral, aortic

The Circuit

  • Body → RA → RV → lungs → LA → LV → body
  • Pulmonary circuit = heart to lungs
  • Systemic circuit = heart to the rest of the body

Vessels

  • Arteries carry blood AWAY from the heart (thick, elastic)
  • Veins return blood TO the heart; they have valves
  • Capillaries are one cell thick — where exchange happens

The Exception

  • The pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood; the pulmonary vein carries oxygenated — named by direction, not oxygen
