The metric ladder, in the 7 steps the TEAS uses

Every metric conversion on the exam is a decimal point moving a known number of places.

No formula and no calculator needed. Count the steps between the two prefixes and move the decimal that many places — right going down the ladder, left going up.

1 kilo– (k)×1000 of the base unit. 1 kg = 1000 g.

2 hecto– (h)×100. Rarely used, but it holds the ladder’s spacing.

3 deka– (da)×10.

4 base unitmetre, gram, litre. The rung everything is counted from.

5 deci– (d)÷10. 1 dL = 0.1 L.

6 centi– (c)÷100. 1 cm = 0.01 m, so 100 cm = 1 m.

7 milli– (m)÷1000. 1 mL = 0.001 L, and 1000 mL = 1 L.
