Why the composite is not one fixed exam
The HESI A2 is modular. Your program picks which subtests you sit: commonly Math, Reading, Vocabulary, Grammar and Anatomy & Physiology, sometimes with Biology, Chemistry or Physics on top. Your composite is the average across those subtests, which is why two applicants can hold the same number and have taken different exams.
The Learning Style and Personality Profile sections are not scored into it. They are for the school's advising, not your admission.
The subject floor that catches people out
Most programs want a composite of 75–80%, and competitive ones 85%+. But many also set a minimum on individual subjects, Anatomy & Physiology most of all. A 62% in A&P can disqualify an application whose composite looks fine, so the calculator flags any subtest under 75% rather than quietly averaging it away.

How is the HESI A2 composite calculated?
It is the average of the academic subtests your program requires. Programs choose which subtests you sit, so two applicants can both have a HESI A2 composite that was built from different exams. Non-academic sections (Learning Style and Personality Profile) are not scored into it.
What HESI A2 score do nursing programs want?
Most programs ask for a composite of 75–80%. Competitive programs want 85% or above. Many also set a floor on individual subjects, most often Anatomy & Physiology, so a strong average does not always rescue a weak subject score.
Is the HESI A2 harder than the TEAS?
Neither is harder across the board. They test different things. The HESI A2 goes deeper on Anatomy & Physiology and can include Chemistry and Physics; the TEAS spreads across Reading, Math, Science and English. Sit the one your program names.
How many times can I take the HESI A2?
Elsevier does not set a universal cap; the program does, usually two or three attempts per application cycle with a waiting period. Check the program's policy before you book a retake.
